Rising above this town of mediaeval origin is a castle standing on a narrow promentory around which the river Vltava flows. the oldest report of it dates from 1250. The original so-called Upper Castle fell vistim to a fire in 1522, only its round tower, called Jakobínka, having been preserved. The Lower castle, built after 1350, was reconstructed in Renaissance style and partly re-Gothicized in the years 1840 to 1844. The castle interiors house valuable furnishings, paintings and collections.
